The bars are always packed and there's always beer cans littering the streets. Out walking around you will smell cigarette smoke almost everywhere you go, billowing out of people's houses and cars. A strip club and a sex shop right next to business you might take your kids to on Main Street downtown. Houses with tons of trash and junk in the yard. There's a lot of neat features here you might not find in another town of similar size, because it serves a greater rural area of maybe 100,000 people, like hot yoga, a brewery, a bar with over 100 craft beers (Slackers, go there), a maker's club with tools and stuff you can use, several well-equipped gyms to work out at, a pretty alright library already but they're building a huge awesome new one, a few fantastic parks and rec things for kids like a water world swimming place, Storybook Land and the rest of Wylie Park, good walking trails, a nice farmers market on Thursdays.Īt the same time, the level of trashiness that is commonplace stands in stark contrast. There's a good sized upper crust wealthy population who are very religious, drive nice cars, go to country clubs on the edge of town with fancy golf courses, that kind of thing. Downtown is surprisingly cosmopolitan and retains much of its old west feel in the architecture. Cable internet from Midco is fast, if not the cheapest. The working poor have a better quality of life than where I'm from. With a few exceptions cost of living is low.
